My family and I have been renting a private house for just over a year.
Recently, I had cause to contact Environmental Health - the landlord refused to repair a gas fire that was condemned. As part of the process, EH carried out a safety check and found that the house was being rented to us with category 1 and 2 hazards which they have instructed him to sort out.
What I would like to know is, if he has been renting us a substandard property are we entitled to a rent rebate? If we are, how would I go about claiming it?

You're not entitled to a rebate. But you can always ask... however, with the Landlord's approach being as you describe it seems unlikely. Vote with your feet. This is your best card as a Tenant. Give the Landlord the problem of trying to re-let the property. If Viewers come around while you're there, nothing wrong with letting them know why you're moving on... it's just facts. Why would you want to stay in a property you know has issues, buy just for less money? Doesn't make sense.
