Have a statutory Tennant who has been in a property for 30 odd
Years in her 80s now, son has recently moved in.

Will the tenancy type expire on her death?

If at the time of death of the statutory tenant, the son lives there and have lived there for at least 2 years, then he will have an assured (not shorthold) tenancy. So no no-fault eviction, but mandatory ground for possession if enough rent arrears (and rent is payable weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly), and market rent.

I am afraid to say that the tenancy normally gets transferred to the family member.
