Hey guys,

Ok, so recently I just moved to Switzerland from the US. We came here on April 7th so we've been here just a little under 2 months.

Before comming here, we did quite a bit of research online attempting to find appartments/single family houses. Once we arrived and started making phone calls to schedule appoints to check locations out, we were hassled for a couple of reasons - 1) language barrier 2) some agencies are turned off by the idea you're a foreigner, so appointments would get delayed/cancelled.

Our hunt for a home was challenging and stressful. One thing I absolutely hate about the typical appartment home layout here, is the joint sitting room to the kitchen bit. Every flat/SFH we liked had joint main rooms. The apparetment we decided on, is currently like that too and i despise the idea of my furniture smelling like curry :(!!!
Locations we had seen would always have something or another missing, either it was a great flat bad area, great view bad flat, horrible flat horrible area BEAUTIFUL view, etc.
The standard appliances here are different from the ones in north America. Stove tops are the smooth flat glass ones here, where as you've got the electrical huge stoves with a massive oven and burner stove tops. The ovens here are so small i could probably bake one whole potatoe in it! uff your average Fridge is probably big enough to fit two cases of beer, two bottles of juice, a packet of milk, some vegies and things andt thats it, this fridge is one third the size of the fridge i had in teh states :( sigh. EVERYTHING IS SO BLOODY COMPACT.

None the less, we've found our pleasent appartment, 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, washer/dryer inclusive, amazing view, all appliances, celler storage area downstaires, a ready elevator used by just three appartments, oh yeh and a BEAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTIFUL VIEW :D ALL FOR 2350 CHF per month. Trust me it sounds like a lot but not bad at all for everything your getting.

Some stats: 70% of switzerlands population rents appartments
            20% own flats
            10% are home buyers

Switzerland is a gorjeous place to live, there are a lot of rules here you would have to get use to and some are pretty silly like no laundry, car washing, vaccuuming on sundays because its meant to be a quiet day Lol. If you use laundry in the celler instead of getting your own pair of washer dryer, you must right your name on a paper outside the laundry room stating when u wish to wash ur clothes because its a shared room with just one washer dryer.    Other factors too, i'll discuss them another time.

Anyways, this is my bit of rant oh wait wait im not done, closets are standard feature in north america and usually always come with property u get, OVER HERE U'VE GOT NO CHOICE BUT TO HIT IKEA AND BUILD UR CLOSETS FROM SCRATCH :(

sigh

i can't wait till we're settled properly

If you guys have any questions please feel free to ask.

Bye :D

Ah me god,  Aisha you are so fussy, in the NA this and in NA that lol. i just jest.  I think its common knowledge that some stuff is generaly bigger in the USA.
Now that you have been in Swiss for 2 Months how do you feel now about the whole relocation bit.
What did you do with your proporty back in NA.
Still the place you have now sounds great, you can not beat a good veiw to wake up to !.
I have offten thought about a house boat, there is something about drinking a starbucks * there would have to be one local* first thing with a breakfast panini on the deck of your house boat looking at water and listerning to all the noises that come along with the river. * like the closest motorway* lol.
But there is something to be said about life on the water.
Are there anymore rules you have come across yet !. Glad you like the place

rofl omg u clown im not fussy. Was a difficult transition ok... sympathise don't criticise! :( lol

Ok so its been like three months now. I've adjusted really well. Still haven't used the oven though cuz it just looks so rediculous i'm just in no mood to bake n e thing ... fussy? fine, i am! lol

We were renting back in the States, and im seriously glad we never bought in our five years there. The market was doing absolutely shit, it was so bad, a friend of mine was meant to move to chicago because her husband got work there, but because her house didn't sell until a year later, she had to stay back with the kids. Poor thing just moved like two weeks ago!!! We had other friends there who were in the medical field bless them, all of them had like two three properties to their names but it was so bad because they were paying like three mortgages. They'd buy newly constructed/under construction homes and would sell upon completion, covering mortgage expenses till then.

Anyways... yep thank God we were renting.

I'd never contemplated the idea of a house boat... definitely seems something i'd love to look into though.

AND YES MY CURRENT VIEW FROM MY FLAT IS AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING... guy u can see a castle from my place... how awesome is that?

Badger

A castle whooooww now that is sooo cool, i love castles and old manor houses, infact i stayed in a manor house on the Isle of Wight three weeks ago, it was built in * wait for it * 872, it was very cool and peicefull, this place had like 2 foot thick walls and the front door key was 12 inches long and made from iron.
Go on use the oven * sympathy * you poor thing  ;)

ps
