QuoteA fifth of homeowners do not have buildings insurance and a quarter do not know what their polices cover, according to new research.

A poll by Nationwide reveals, despite last summer's floods causing an upturn in the number of people buying home insurance, many still have no protection.

Of those who do have building insurance, 25 per cent do not know what their policies cover, meaning they are at risk of being underinsured.

Some 14 per cent of people admit to having no contents insurance – despite the majority of household valuing their contents at between £10,000 and £20,000.

Seventy per cent of those with home insurance do not know how much their policies cover.

Does anyone here not have home insurance, just curious?

I have cover and it was put to good use 4 years ago when i had a fire.  So as i have beed bitten by the beast i make sure i have insurance comming out my ears.
What i find amazing is that people dont realise how much to cover themselves for.  To replace all of your belongings costs a bloooming fortune i tell ya.
I think some people dont pay cos they have the attitude, if it happens we will just replace it.  it dont work like that.

So yes i have insurances in place.

I have insurance, but only for structural damages. My tenants are responsbile for their own belongings.

It's a pretty dangerous game living without home insurance, in my opinion. And for only £100-£200 p/y, I don't think it's worth taking the risk.

I didn't used to, because to start with I couldn't really afford it and when I lived in rented (partially landlord's furniture, partially my own) I rang around and nobody would cover me for the mix of ownership of furnishings. It had to be either all mine or all the landlords. So from then on I was in the habit of taking the risk.

Last year though, just before I went to Japan, I got all paranoid about the place burning down while I was gone and got it sorted, so its up for renewal soon. If you pay it monthly it really isn't very expensive (certainly not as bloody expensive as council tax!!!!!).
