I hope I will not get burned or, worse, just ignored, but since each side has a tendency to be biased I would like to know your opinion.
I am a tenant who recently sub-rented a room in a shared house with no contract. Since I rented the place some facilities stopped working: toaster, iron, 1st water heater and lastly (until now)the 2nd water heater. So, no baths. The other tenants (with contract) seem that they couldn't care less. Fortunately I will only be staying there for another couple of weeks but the money I spent to quickly find an alternative place to bath almost covers what I will be owing then. The "sub-landlord" went for vacancies and did not even left a contact. Despite that I left him a voicemail.
I am planning not to pay him if nothing is done.
What would you do if you were a tenant there?

Don't worry, I don't think anyone is going to burn you. This isn't that kind of place :)

Since there is no contract in place, there's very little your landlord can do if you refuse to pay. It all seems a bit dodgy since there is no contract.

Since you are paying rent, you're expected to get working utilities. If I were you, I wouldn't pay. As I said, your landlord can't do much about it, since there is only a verbal agreement.

I would only take matters up further if i was going to stay for longer,  if you dont want any hastle just pay a bit saying what you have told us, and go, or do as fag said and just go when the time is right.
You should have got a contract drawn up from the start, even if your * sub landlord * ? didnt get one done you could have made one up.

I meant sublessor. Sorry, not familiar with the slang.
I don't have a contract since it is pretty much impossible to get a short term let and it tends to be simpler that way. Of course, when the unexpected happens, it isn't anymore.
Anyway thanks for the replies.
