Tenant left without paying bills

I evicted my tenant just over a month ago and today I received two bills from energy star. One for the elecricity and one for gas. They both add up to approx £200.

I never registered anything under my name (besides from the actual property), so I don't think I'm liable to pay the bills. They obviously tracked me down because the bills were never paid for.

I had a look on the landlord website and found a thread which covered the same topic. This is what it said:

Original post:
QuoteThis is my first post so sorry if it has already been posted. Tennants have moved out leaving bills unpaid have informed gas and electricity boards but have now recieved huge bill even though I have supplied forwarding addresses. am I liable for outstanding bill ?

Replies:

Quotein a word no. utility companies can often try it on, usually it is just a lack of communication at their end, just call them and give them addresses again.

I rented out a house in a very inexperience fashion for several years. Tenant left last July - sent me keys but no address.
When I read the electricity meter, I found she had been paying (under)estimated bills all the time. Account was still in my name, so I thought I was lumbered with £1300 bill. But when I told SWALEC about it, and sent proof house was unnoccupied now, they accepted the reading I took, and only charged me from date she left.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Or does anyone else have more knowledge on the situation?

P.s. that tenant was such a bitch.

I just spoke to my letting agent and he said I'm not liable for the bills because I wasn't living there and the services weren't registered under my name.

I'm going to call energy star and find out the score. I'll let you know the outcome so anyone else who gets into this problem will know the situation.

Ok, this turned out well!! Woo hoo!

As long as you have a tenancy agreement and can prove that your tenant occupied the property, you don't need to pay unpaid bills that they are reponsible for! My tenant didn't even register her name with the company. Granted, that was my mistake, I should have checked. Although, i did tell her to do it, and I believed her when she told me she did.

The account was under my name, but because I can prove I had a tenant during the period the bill accounted for, I still don't have to pay. They will be chasing my crook of a tenant now!

Indeed :)

I hate tenants that take the piss!

Glad you got it sorted. I hate anyone who takes the piss.

Discovered a new pet-peeve yesterday ... queue jumpers. In fairness I could've guessed it'd hack me off, but I've now realised it is a bona fide top ten pet hate of mine.

It actually made me wonder if I could bear living in a culture where people don't queue. I'm not sure I'd ever adjust.

She's a DSS tenant, so she should be easy to track down.

I gave the company her dad's address anyways; he was the guarantor. She's not getting away with this :)
