I have today shown prospective tenants my flat. Their story is they have just returned to the UK after living in Cyprus for seven years and due to the amount of time out of the country they claim their credit rating will have reverted to zero and have to start again in building up a credit score. One has already secured a job which she starts next week and the other is to be self employed. I will of course still have them checked out, although unsure how much information the referencing company will be able to come back with.

Even if they have no credit score now, will their past history before leaving the UK still be in existence?

It did sound like a convincing and plausable story, but could this be a ploy to cover up reality?

Does anyone have any advise on renting to someone who can prove they are in employment but with no credit rating?

I think the rule of thumb is that they need to have been living in the UK for the past 5 years for any sort of Credit Score/History to be built up, but don't quote me on that. If you are willing to take a chance then I would reccomend initially signing them up on a 6 month tenancy and getting a solid guarantor in place who passes a credit check and is ideally a family member who can vouch
