HMRC 'help'

Despite HMRC flooding us with their helpful reminders (not much cost to these, but certainly not free) via email and SMS - going quickly from sounding like a normal reminder for something to, well, they can only be described as phishy (they carry all the traits you are taught to pay attention to - threats of consequences, an element of urgency and the need for immediate action - I especially love the ones where they tempt you into filing 'early'... as though it's really early anyway)...

I count 9 in 2025 alone, so 9 emails in January. I think I deleted some early in the month too... so it's probably more than 9. Yet, still, they don't tie this back to whether they can tell you've paid or not. Even after I'd paid I received emails reminding me that I must pay. If you don't want to be badgered then you can inform them of that - but they're simply not sophisticated enough to discern this all by themselves.

So, was it a surprise to read - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdjdm9mrdzxo - which carries a stupendous statistic that - "...more than 31,000 who finished it during the final hour...".

It's not fraud if it emanates from the Government, right?

The article claims, further down, that eBay and Vinted will now be compelled to share information with HMRC which they will cross-reference. I'll believe it when I see it.

Keep the herd in line through fear, not facts.

Mine was submitted late December, yet they still sent reminders nearly daily until the deadline. When the Ltd. company was set up to extend the freehold on the flats, HMRC gave assurances that there was no need to file tax accounts, it could be listed as " dormant" . Companies House said likewise.  No surprise then when they promptly issue a £100 fine the first year. It was a rigmarole to get that refunded.
