(Good) tenants used break clause at 4 months in to end a 6 month tenancy. This was agreed up front.
Rent is paid up fully to 14th Jan which represents the full 6 months. We are meeting today to do final check and hand keys over.  My question is are tenants still liable for utilities and council tax up until todays date or 14th Jan. I appreciate it is only a matter of days but want to be in full possession of all facts. I expect we will read the gas/elec metres today so that one seems clear but council tax less so. Thanks in advance.
FWIW I am happy to pick up council tax bill from today if tenants hand keys over and we can remarket.

If the tenancy was of a fixed term of at least 6 months, then tenant pay council tax until end of tenancy. However, the catch here is that while the break notice from the tenant would had ended the tenancy on 14 Jan, if you're doing check out and handing keys over today, it's entirely arguable that there's a surrender by operation of law (aka implied surrender) today, in which case the tenancy ended there and then and not 14 Jan.
