Taking a name off an assured shorthold tenancy agreement

Hi,
some recently signed up tenants have split up and both were named on the ASTA. The lady paid the deposit and two month's rent. She says that she has broken up with the guy and that her and her son (aged 8) will be the only tenants in the house. Is it OK just to take him off the tenancy agreement and redo it in her name only?

on a joint tenancy agreement the one that leaves has to provide you with a notice to quit then that ends the tenancy for partner  at the same time,       you then before the month is up, agree if you want to let the remaining one stay on a new  sole tenancy agreement     know this as i didn't do it correctly leaving a bit of a nightmare       still is but thinking it will be sorted soon

Is the deposit in both the tenants names? With the DPS I know you have to request the deposit back and repay it in under the name of the only tenant otherwise both will still be liable for damage at the end of the tenancy.
