So, has anyone else heard the news that CORGI has lost the gas regulation business to a company called CAPITA for the next 10 years after the HSE decided to interfere.

Now the thing is (and this is my own personal interpretation of the facts) it would appear that technically all CORGI registered plumbers are no longer qualified to issue Landlord Gas Safety Certificates (capita take over from April 1st 2009). My understanding is that they will have to be re-assesed under the new company as CORGI did not release the CORGI name to them. It would also appear that anyone can now apply for CORGI membership even though they are not qualified, get a van sticker and due to the publics awareness of the cORGI brand be able to work. Stickers will no longer carry the CORGI registration number.

Do a google search on CORGI & CAPITA and see if you come up with the same interpretation. If true there has been no advertising, most of the lettings agents are unaware of the change and so are a lot of plumbers.

Oh, wow, that's the first I've heard of that.

Is CAPITA a standard, like CORGI? How common are CAPITA registered plumbers, do you know?

My accountants husband is a plumber and I'll be seeing her tomorrow, so I'm going to ask her. She's normally clued up on all this!

Been doing some more digging. Apparently the new scheme is going to be called GAS SAFE and it will cost CORGI registered engineers £175.00 to convert to the new scheme. It does not alter the fact that you or I could apply to CORGI now and get a CORGI sticker for your car/van and with the brand awareness of CORGI people would still recognise you as bona fide even though you are not qualified.
My landlord association is updating their files at the moment. Will advise as soon as I know anything!
