Preston city council has sent me a liability order for rent unpaid by a previous tenant.
I've provided them the tenants ast & evidence of them paying me rent for the 6 months the council believe I owe!
They say they have proof the tenants left 6 months earlier than they did - but they won't provide any evidence of that to me & now they're requesting I send them my tax return!!!
WTF has that to do with anything????

Anyone else had any issues or suggestions?

If you are sure they have the liability incorrect, i.e. the tenant left on X and not X-6 months that the council is saying, then appeal and if unsuccessful take it to Valuation Tribunal.

What evidence do you actually have? If that six months is part of a fixed term tenancy, or part of a contractual periodic tenancy with an initial definite term of at least six months, then that's sufficient. If however it's part of a statutory periodic tenancy, then (in most cases) it's not sufficient. Tenant is liable for council tax during a SPT (where the period is less than six-monthly) only if they have the property as their sole or main residence, i.e. they were actually living there.
