Hello all,

I have given notice to move out of my flat on the 30th April and have paid rent in full up to that date. I am actually moving out on the 11th April, and I'm leaving the country on the 14th.

The letting agent have said that they intend to carry out the inspection on the 3rd May. It took some argument before they stopped insisting that someone hand back the keys on exactly the 30th (Saturday, when they're shut anyway and it's a 200 mile round trip for anyone I know). I'm not really comfortable with not being there and not getting everything wrapped up before I leave, especially as if there's any issues I will be thousands of miles and 8 hrs time difference away.

I don't anticipate any issues as I haven't damaged anything, however the letting agent hasn't filled me with confidence so far. Unfortunately my landlord is away until after I leave, otherwise I'm sure I could have worked something out with him; he's been very reasonable throughout.

Where do I stand on this? Can I insist that the inspection and return of keys is done before I leave, or am I stuck because my contract doesn't end until the 30th?

Hey Truffles,

Out of curiosity, has your deposit been secured in a tenancy deposit scheme?

Truffles

Yes, it's held by the deposit protection service.
