I rent a house and have one dog that the landlord requested I pay £100 deposit for allowing the dog, which I dont have an issue with. The landlord has inspected the property since I moved in almost a year ago, and he is pleased with us being in the property as my partner does all the diy. However we have  now acquired a second dog and I am concerned he will ask for another £100. Is this the legal or normal thing ??

If you didn't have an issue paying £100 for 1 dog, why would you - theoretically - have an issue paying double for double the number of dogs? And on, and on..? It seems, at least to me, that you would've been best clearing the introduction of the second dog with your Landlord before acquiring it... you didn't choose to, though. I'd probably be more concerned about eviction for being untrustworthy... and in trying to find a new home with, now, 2 dogs. It's just best to be above-board with these things. You have presented the Landlord with a fait-accompli.

Landlords who allow pets are rare, and should be treated with some respect.£100 is a very reasonable sum to pay (I know of landlords who have demanded, and received,£1000 for one dog) I would contact the landlord to inform him,as a courtesy. If he request a further deposit he is perfectly within his rights, but he may waive it if you are honest with him.

I thought that ship had sailed.

Yes,I know, but if one admits to being naughty, and grovels a bit,it can be terribly disarming.Landlord might also like dogs too, which is always the sign of a kind and generous person.

I like dogs. But I'm not fond of disingenuous people. Dogs aren't disingenuous.

The OP could be said to be slightly disingenuous... possibly... by my assumption... the word "acquired" seems chosen to mask a sentence that could be "thought about, selected and purchased all under the radar to avoid detection"... always better to ask for forgiveness than permission, right? However, I accept that the second dog could be a homeless old pensioner dog, whose master has passed on, and is in need of a home and company... in that situation what Landlord could ever object? The £100 would be asked for on principle, though. Otherwise what is the deterrent to finding some kind of breeding kennel / doggy boarding retreat at the next inspection?

heavykarma

Some dogs are disingenuous.I have had 40 dogs (not all at once-that would be mad) and some have been sly.One used to race to bark at the front door, alerting the others who would follow suit. They would stand looking puzzled at the door, while he rushed back and ate their dinners.

I would not be surprised if you had told me it was all at once.  :P
