Hi all,

1,5 year ago we used to live on a flat with some friends, we moved out without handing our notice as one of the guys who stayed in the flat was bringing his wife and wanted to change the names in the contract without having to go through all the process again we understand and we left it up to him to take care of it.

Now we received some email that there are 4k of unpaid rent on the house and we know he is leaving the house this month.

Could we get in trouble and have to pay the amount ourselves? Can we get a lawyer? we have in writing (messenger) all the conversations showing that he says he will take care of everything and definete proof that we are out of the property for past 1,5 year.

What sort of contract was it at the time you left? Was there still an active AST or had it gone onto periodic? In general the landlord won't be interested in the casual arrangements you had with the other tenant. If your names are still on the contract, you could be liable to pay rent arrears.I cannot see why you did not have the courtesy to inform the landlord that you were leaving ? Have you contacted him to discuss the situation ?. I am assuming that the debt does not relate to the period when you were still living there.
