Hello,
I have been renting a flat for over 10 years now. In May, I've been given a notice to leave the property until 1st of August. I have left the property and gave the keys to the agency on the 1st of July. However, the report stated that we owe the full month rent to the landlord for the period 01.07.2019-31.07.2019. The money will be taken from our deposit. My question is wether we owe the agency the money for the July, since we gave back the keys to the property on 1st of July?

Did you give your landlord at least one month's notice that you intended to leave on the 1st of July?

Who gave who notice?

What if anything did the agent say when you went to drop the keys off, or when you told them you're leaving on 1 July and will be dropping keys off that day?

Agency gave us notice to leave. We haven't been told anything when we came to give the keys back

Depsite what landlord's (agent's action bind landlord so just think landlord when agent) notice may seems to suggest, their notice does not end tenancy on expiry. As you didn't give your own notice (which would end tenancy on expiry), you're going to have to argue surrender, which basically mean a mutual agreement to end the tenancy.

"We were told to leave by you, we duly left. We went to agent to drop keys off. The agent accepted the keys on behalf of the landlord with no objection. There was an implied surrender at that point. No more tenancy, no more rent due."
