I have been renting privatly for 3 1/2 years, and need a new home as my landlord had to sell the house. I have been looking for over 3 months with no luck as i do get housing benefits !

My story in short: I am french, been in the uk for 15 years, worked all along, was self sufficient with high paid job in the city, had a house myself, 2 children and my husband left when my kids were 2 years old and 6 months old ( about 3 1/2 years ago) had to sell my house, lost everything. Managed to find a 3 bed house to rent through the private sector, found a job part time with full time offer when my youngest goes to school in september, so yes I am single, i have 2 children, but i do work and want to work and be self sufficient again, my salary alone cannot cover everything as i had to put my kids 's need first ! Thought i was gradually getting back on my feet unil landlord had to sell his house. Despite having landlord, work and characetr reference I cannot get a property to live in. Barnet council canno help me as I need to be homeless and go through eviction process to even consider me ( regardless of landlord situation who might lose buyer if i dont go by the end of tenancy agreement) and could send me anywhere regardless of my work. My family is in France so cannot be guarantor.

What do I do now? Am i missing something? Please help in what i can do? is there any places where there are landlords who would give a chance to people like me?

Squirel, I feel your pain.

As I understand it, you can have housing benefit paid directly to you, yes?

You have no choice but to not tell them you receive this.

Provided you pay your rent on time, and can finance the timing issues, then the landlord should never know your personal circumstances.

Controversial!

Thank you, I am obviously too honest here, thought though they would ask for pay slips and my pay slips wouldn't cover the rent ! Thank you for the tip

Well, as I say, it's not that good a piece of advice and will rely on your private landlord not doing his checks that well....
