Morning,
I am slightly worried regarding the credit check performed as part of referencing for a property. Myself and my partner are looking to rent a house but I have two defaults on my file and a very poor credit score , no CCJ's and no insolvency/bankruptcy. His account is clean.
My understanding was they won't show on a credit check as it's just public information so I don't need to declare them. We have no issues paying rent as we both earn well and can produce bank statements and payslips.
Can someone just confirm this is correct, I'm stating to panic now that issues I had when I lived on my own will have an impact on our life now.
Thank you

Issues that you had when you lived on your own may well impact your life now.

You understand that this is the whole point of having a credit score in the first place, don't you? So, there's nothing you can actually do when you're scanned... whatever comes back will come back and the decision that is made will be made. You might yet get a positive result. Don't prejudge what will happen.

If your credit appears unacceptable there are still things you can do. Place the responsibility for the entire rent on your partner (on paper), offer some incentive, like 3 months of rent up front. That kind of thing. You can't offer a larger Deposit any longer as the amount that can be taken by the other side is limited.

I cannot confirm what you hope, because I reckon different companies do their checks in different ways... but I believe Defaults would be returned, even on a soft check. See how it goes and if you get scuppered come back here for ideas. Don't just accept a "no" if that comes to pass. Everyone has a youth.

You can see what your credit record looks like buy buying a check from Experian (although you might be able to get a free one if you sign up).
A company callee Credit Karma give you a credit check service for no cost, but may sell your data (I don't know this) and definitely advertise to you.

What landlords and agents generally see from a "credit check" is very limited, it's usually a numbered score and no supporting information, often it's just a decision, rent, rent with guarantor, computer says no.

As Hippogriff says, issues that you had when you lived on your own will impact your life now, that's exactly how a credit history works - on the basis that people don't change.

I use Credit Karma. They send you emails. There is some advertising. Nothing is overly intrusive. They say they do not sell your information https://help.creditkarma.co.uk/s/article/Is-Credit-Karma-safe#:~:text=We%20don't%20sell%20your,third%20parties%20for%20any%20purpose. but they obviously need to share it with third parties for products they may offer or suggest.
