My landlord recently let some builders into the shared house which resulted in a number of high value items being removed. the only people in the house were the builders so it was repotrted to the police who were not interested as they say the theft happened in the house. My question is does the landlord have a resposonsibilty / liability here as he allowed access to the property from which the theft resulted ?

No, its the tenants house, and the landlord does not have a right to enter, the tenant has to allow this.

All tenants contents should be insured by the tenant, therefore the onus for compensation for loss lies with the tenant and not the landlord.

Speak to Matt Alright see if he can get them on the wall... Its so frustrating I can understand your anger, but you should a)be insured, b) look to the criminals to sort out rather than the landlord.

Although as you mention an Agent, it may be that the landlord is unaware, and should be contacted in any event, it's not something the Agent is going to tell them.

This is why tenants have the right to say no, have the right to be present, and sensibly should be to avoid these sorts of issues.
