Hi to all
I had rented a house for over 3 years, renewing my contract every 6 months. Recently I ended my tenancy 2 months early. The rental agency said I was still liable to pay the rent until my contract runs out or until they find another tenant. I was ok with that. I moved out and continued to pay the rent. However - since moving out the rentail agency have had the painter and decorators in , along with new doors and windows that the landlord wanted - surely I shouldnt be paying whilst this work is being done - as it also prevents new tenants from moving in . Surely they should of waited until my contract was finished before allowing work to be carried out?  They have now found new tentants and they moved in days after my contract finished
Would welcome any thoughts on this please

Hi Benn,

Did you officially surrender/terminate the tenancy, or did you just continue paying rent while the tenancy continued?

I feel for you Ben.

You are too nice for your own good though, and the Landlord and Agents are taking advantage of this fact.

They will argue, "reasonably" that the works would make letting quicker and it more likely that you would not have to pay for so long.

My advice.... Let it go.....

It's always the nice guys that get shafted!

Thank you for your replies ... Yes I did hand back my keys and "checkout" as told this is what I had to do by rental agency. I am now guessing that maybe I shouldn't have !! Dam !!!

Not really.

It was the right thing to do.

Fingers crossed they find someone quickly.

:( This is a little bit irritating to say the least Ben.

If only all tenants were as easy to deal with an met their obligations with such a moral approach.

Needless to say, although it is annoying for you, had you not known they had been doing works, you would have been none the wiser.  I suppose the craw in your throat is that the landlord has essentially benefited from you moving early as you've paid his maintenance bill!  Put it down to experience and believe in karma :)
