Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me. We moved into a privately rented property last Novemebr.  We had huge issues with the house (boiler issues, mould in babies bedroom, they had locked the loft, however when we first viewed it, it was open and we were told we could use it, a front door which is very difficult to lock and unlock... I was locked out of house for over 2 hours due to issues with hinges etc... Issues with electrics, constantly blowing fuses, cooker stopped working on several occasions etc... All of this happened between November 2012 and August 2013!! My main issue was that I was told that there was a gas certificate for the gas fire in the living room. However, since moving out, we went to go and fetch our post and the new tenants informed us that the gas fire had to be removed as it was leaking a lot of carbon monoxide!!! We had previously complained about issues with the fire and were told that it just needed to be cleaned. Is there anything I can do about this, as it makes me really angry that we were paying £600 per month and at the same time were putting our lives in danger! Our daughter was 6 months old and our son was 2 when we moved into the property. We have visited the doctors on several occasions with flu like symptoms and drowsiness etc... however I am now concerned that they were ill due to the carbon monoxide. As a parent you do everything to keep your children safe, but we actually put our children's lives in danger and this makes me furious!!! please help... can I do anything? p.s. the landlord has 5 other properties

I feel so bad for you :-[. I am in a similar situation and have tried every avenue for help. I paid and agency £250 to move into the place I am in, only to discover that it is an illegal conversion without planning permission. My landlord has a workshop underneath where he restores cars and does industrial standard welding work and I have been subjected to all manner of toxic fumes. I was taken to A&E twice in September with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. At the time I did not know about carbon monoxide poisoning and its symptoms, or that the fumes I had been inhaling contained this and other highly toxic substances called isocyanides.  Because of my ignorance I was not tested for carbon monoxide exposure (it will leave your system after about 4 hours once you are no longer being exposed) and therefore have no proof. The council are now involved but will only act from 'now', meaning that what my landlord has subjected me to, he will get away with! I have been here a year in horrendous conditions (no soundproofing, no fire safety, no fire walls, etc) paid almost £8000 in rent and my landlord will walk away with the lot!! My only course of action is to take my landlord to court myself for breach of contract etc and as this is a civil matter there is no Legal Aid available to me. I am Disabled and live on benefits and cannot afford to pay a solicitor myself (£210 per hour!). Until the laws are changed with regards Private Landlords, then what has happened to you, and what is still happening to me, will continue to go on. Landlords will make a fortune, at the detriment of their tenants health and safety and there is not a single law to stop them!  Yes if the council catch them, then they will be asked to put the property right but they will not be punished for whatever terrible living conditions previous tenants have been expected to live in, neither will they have to pay back the rent from when the conversion was unsafe and illegal >:(!! I wish you the best of luck, you could of course try the small claims court, but you can only claim up to £5000 back from your landlord I think? I plan to contact newspapers, Watchdog, Don't get Mad get Dom, anyone who will listen so I can to name and shame this Landlord as like you I am just 1 tenant but he rents 5 properties out, all illegal, all substandard. I did some googling and The Guardian online has done a few stories about illegal and dangerous rental properties, maybe if more tenants went to them with their stories, something might have to be done to change the law?
