There is a door with no hinges in my bedroom that blew open and landed on my laptop. The screen is smashed and no longer usable. My landlord acknowledged that it was broken in person when we moved in and said that it sometimes blows open. She did not write this in the inventory and we did not ask her in writing to fix it. The tenancy agreement says that she would be liable for any costs that we incurred through fixing damages due to negligence but that we have an obligation to tell the landlord about any issues. This does mean that she would have to replace my laptop if we had raised the issue with the door- but is she still liable because she already knew about it? Surely that clause about letting her know about it is because she can't fix what she doesn't know about. Thoughts? Should I pursue it or ask for a contribution or is she not liable at all? Thanks all

It sounds as if she would be liable to cover the loss.There is no point though in deciding what to do until you approach her yourself,she may be quite prepared to cough up.

I don't quite understand the idea of a door with no hinges. Isn't that basically just a big plank of wood? Or did you mean it doesn't have a catch?
