After the failure of Tescos private sales initiative in 2007, they've now decided to become a fully-fledged estate agency. According to a piece in the Indepdendent, we should expect to see estate agency offices and dedicated staff in Tesco supermarkets across the country by Spring. The agents will not only undercut traditional high street services - charging, the rumour goes, as little as 1% commission - but will also be able to use competition laws to force Rightmove to list their properties.

Well, if they're going to offer lower rates, why not?

Tescos are bad news as far as I'm concerned. Yes, they drive down prices, but they are the UK version of Walmart (albeit Asda is literally the UK arm of Walmart).

I tried to do my weekly shop in Tesco recently when Sainsburys was out of action. Their fruit and veg section was entirely depleted. There was less choice. They had lots of TVs though.

Often you hear that Sainsbury's is more expensive. mySupermarket.com suggests otherwise.

When commercial organisations become too dominant in the market place you start to see problems. I firmly believe we're now reaching a point where supermarkets have successfully displaced most alternatives and are now interested in milking their dominant position for as much as its worth, resulting ultimately in less choice for the consumer.

So even though I have no love of estate agents, the idea of Tesco dipping their fingers in that pie gives me the same uneasy feeling as when Microsoft decided to launch the Xbox.
