Nigel Gray, 44, knocked down the porch and conservatory, worth £15,000, from the property in Shoreham, West Sussex.

The tenant, who had permission from the council to make improvements to the house, offered a string of excuses and missed deadlines for payment, he said.

Mr Gray used a sledgehammer to break up the porch from Anita Dovey's home, removed the conservatory one window at a time and removed the French doors.

"I'm absolutely gutted to have had to do this because it was such fantastic handiwork but I could not just let this go," Mr Gray said.

"We just kept on getting a string of excuses and bounced cheques."

QuoteA spokesman for Adur District Council said: "Council tenants are allowed to make improvements to their home. Unfortunately in this case this private agreement has gone wrong.

"Mrs Dovey will be billed the cost of putting the property back to its original state."

I feel sorry for Nigel Gray, because that tenant took the piss. But good for him for knocking it down. But what confuses me is how could a council tenant possibly afford 15k of extension work? If she could have afforded it, surely she shouldn't be a council tenant? Bit of common sense, aye, Nigel!

Councils say you can pimp your gaff if you want.  That was the problem fag, she didnt have the money.
I blame the builder as well, he should have vetted his customer knowing she was a council tenant, no diss intended, but if i was to do some work on a council house and it was going to cost 22k alarm bells would ring !!!!.

What do we always say mr Fag.  YOU GOTTA DO YOUR HOME WORK SON

Yeah, I agree completely. Like I said, "But what confuses me is how could a council tenant possibly afford 15k of extension work? If she could have afforded it, surely she shouldn't be a council tenant? Bit of common sense, aye, Nigel!"

What i was saying is, maybe she never had the 15k for the work anyway !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . i also think she wasnt the full shilling, my big hairy one.

Common sense indeed  x

I saw this, this morning and I get what you're saying AB.

I'm wondering what kind of deposit was paid as the article doesn't mention anything about one, hmm. If she didn't pay one then, well, duh to the builder!

I'm asuming there was no desposit, because he claims he lost every penny on the job.

Like I said, I feel sorry for the builder, but what a plonker!

He is just a nice person - he does believe in human nature (woman nature) ::), real man.....
At least, he have got a 15K satisfaction when he  broke up her porch... he lost nothing.
Ne is a coy man, mb the breaking is his only indulgence...

PS: but where she was when he was doing that?

Materials, labour and conservatories don't come for free hence why he needed to be paid!

She was sat in the front room watching it on GMTV.

He lost 22k in total, he also confessed that he might have to close one of his businesses as a result...So to say he lost nothing is pretty, err..well, wrong. lol

The council gave him permission to knock it down, so she probably just sat back and watched, helplessly.
