Basically, more and more people are looking online to buy homes privately, which means cutting out the middle man- the estate agent. In average, ES's take a 2% cut of the sale price, meaning there is huge savings to be made.

I'm sure there are a lot of positives and negatives of cutting out the middle man- would you buy privately?

I would consider it if I had more experience buying and selling under my belt.

In '93 when my folks were trying to sell their house (which had dropped in value quite a lot in the preceding few years), they were made an offer by a couple who lived in the same village. They sold privately.

The estate agents were probably hacked off but it wasn't them that sold it ... and they probably wouldn't have done for some time to come.

Nobody cares as much about buying or selling your home as you do - if there is an increase in private sales it probably reflects a decrease in the service received from estate agents (even if this is justified by some business/economical argument, from the agents point of view). Markets correct themselves.

If I wasn't in a rush, then I would most likely sell privately. I imagine selling privately would take considerably longer than going through an estate agent, at least right now.

I guess the biggest advantage is that nothing gets lost in translation when you talk directly with the vendor.
