Estate agents shame tenants by putting up 'rent dodger lives here' signs outside

There's currently an estate agent up in Merseyside that is putting the following sign outside tenants rental accommodation that aren't paying rent:

The idea is to make everyone, especially the neighbours, to be aware of the fact that they live next door to rent-dodgers. There are legal questions clouding the practice, but for now, it's an on going practice. And from what we're told, we should expect to see a lot more of these signs.

Neil Heffey, a partner in the company, said he was tired of being avoided by those who refused to pay for their living accommodation, provided by or through his company.

Apparently the signs will not apply to hardship cases, but there are people who take the rent paid to them by the Government and do not pass it on.

I have no problem with the signs. In fact, make the signs bigger. However, i'm sure they'll be ripped down with a firm tug after as soon as their spotted by the tenant.

Bloody Hell - What a great idea!!!

Would not like to be on the end of the potential llegal action it could generate though. I suppose as a last resort it's got potential but it is as subtle as a baseball bat across the back of the head, which as it's merseyside, is definately possible.

PS still having loads of fun with Nat West trying to obtain mortgage. This time, through their errors, they have managed to place late payment markers against my credit file not once but twice causing me to be rejected by a mortgage company. Banking Ombusdman now involved!! They have removed markers promptly though. Great fun. Have you tried the free credit file checks via www.creditexpert.com. very interesting.

Not tried that site before, i'll have a look in a bit.

So, do you know if you're getting any compensation yet?

No idea as yet - gievn them the opportunity to come back to me with a figure so I can reject the first offer!

Still awaiting whether I have the mortgage. Surveyor went out and on his own initiative valued the place as a 3 bed family home instead of a 4/5 bed let even though he was the same person who did the valuation on the previous house that fell through. That the house is 4 doors away from the one I am persuing now did not seem to enter his tiny beetle like brain!

My recommendation - avoid Nat West / RBOS like the plague when seeking mortgages. The stress and hassle really is not worth it.

Will write more when I have news!
