I currently rent out several properties and have registered all the deposits with the exception of the first one I let out (I didn't realise I had to at that time!).  The deposit was received approx two & half years ago.  I have had no problems with the tenants at all so far.  Thank you in anticipation.

I am no expert but I would suggest you register it now. 
I did the same thing and and was advised to register it immediately which I did 9 months after tenants moved in. 
It was a good thing I did as tenants trashed the property and now I am in dispute with them over the deposit. Despite appalling damage I am having a struggle to prove it as I did not take pictures before they moved in.  Hopefully from the pictures I have now it will be obvious that I could not possibly have let the property to anyone in the state it was left in
