Am I being ripped off to repair/replace soffits & fascias at my property?

Hi all,

I own a 3 bed semi with a detached garage which I rent out currently to tenants.

I noticed I need to do some repair work to the boxend soffit fascia as there's a hole.

I met a roofing chap at the property and they had a look at the whole property's soffit/fascia/guttering.

They've quoted £1200 to do a patch up job but said it would last about two years or so.

They've also quoted around £5000 to replace all wooden soffit/fascia/bargeboard and guttering with pvc.

(Scaffolding needed.)

The contractor has basically said eventually the whole house will need doing as in places it is starting split. (Wood is about 35 years old).

I'm having trouble finding further roofers to get quotes.

I wasn't expecting the price of a repair job or complete replacement to be this amount.

I thought maybe repair £600 or complete replacement £3000 after doing some googling.

-Wondered if anyone could give some advice on prices - does this seem a rip off, or am I out of touch with prices in the south west of the UK?!  ::)

Thanks.
Betty

There's a reasonable breakdown of the task with price ranges here:

Out of interest, where are you in the South West?  I'm looking for a decent roofer too (N Devon).

Yes.

They will probably just stick plastic over the rotting wood anyway..despite telling you it's new wood underneath.  I've found roofers to be the very worse of the trades.  Never trust a roofer.
