Hi,

firstly, what a great website.

My tenant has not being paying his electricity bill to the electricity supplier. He owes about £8,000.

The electricity company has cut the electrics to the commerical property.

The tenant has now moved out of the property and I would like to get the electrics reconnected for a new tenant. However, the company is saying I have to give them £5,000 to reconnect it, which they will give me back once I find a new supplier.

Apprently no other electric company can reconnect the electrics only the one that has disconnected the supply.

I'm unsure what to do, as this was my tenants responsibility and not mine. I feel like they are punshing me for someone elses incompetence.

Incorrect advice has been given.
You are not liable for a previous occupant's bills.
What the utility company could do is install a PAYG meter unless you pass a credit check with them
YOU ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY ELECTRICITY BILL NOT IN YOUR NAME.
They must supply you irrespective of any bad debts left by a previous occupier!!
