Broken letterbox on property from alleged attempted break-in

I would like to know what other landlords think as to whose responsibility (landlord or tenant) it is for replacing a broken letterbox from an alleged attempted break-in?

Personally, if it was an attempted break-in, I feel that the tenant should be paying or claiming off their own insurance.

Thanks

Just following on from my initial post - if it was an attempted break in - isn't it the responsibility from the tenant to report it to the police for a crime reference number at the very least?

Unless the whole door has been damaged I doubt if it would be worth the excess to make a claim.Presumably your tenant would not have insurance cover for more than their own personal stuff,if that? I would consider it my responsibility to get this done, regardless of what the legal position is.The only exception would be if it was a friend of the tenant who was responsible. This is surely only a DIY job?

Fair point. Perhaps I may consider meeting in the middle and suggest 50/50 of the cost? Thanks for the advice.

Tenants would usually only have Contents Insurance, if even that. Tenants would not usually be paying to insure your building, right? You hold the policy for the Building / Landlord Insurance.

I note the word "alleged" from which I infer you don't think there was an actual attempt at break-in... I think it would be a fair point to ask for a Crime Number... it would be suspicious to hear that nothing was done about it at all (but circumstances are unclear from what's been posted, of course). Although I come down on the side of taking this repair on my own shoulders, perhaps more information (or lack of Crime Number etc.) could sway me... because - if it was the whole door, say a £1,200 expense - then you'd need that Crime Number if you were going to claim on your Insurance.
