I have a tenant that has asked if she can stay for a few more weeks (after the 5th December as stated in the section 21) as the council must view the new house to see if it will be suitable for her needs, The question is a few weeks would be very close to Christmas and I don't want to be seen as The nasty landlord. can I extend the date of the section 21 to say the 5th January 2016 with out having to start the whole process again.?  BTW I did give her three months notice instead of the statutory two. I hope this makes sense to someone who can help a newby at this Landlord malarkey :-\.

Be wary of advice received from a blog (including my own)
Always do your own research

If a tenant wants to stay after the expiry of a section 21 notice (usually for a for a short time) this can be dealt with by sending a letter advising the tenant that the landlord will not be enforcing the expired possession order until [add specific date].
You don't do anything with the notice you have served.
Technically you don't even need to send a letter but the tenant might get stressed out if you don't.
Legally (in the old system pre Oct 1 2015) there was a case where there was 6 year gap between the s21 expiry and  possession order.
(Note post Oct 1 2015 s21 notices will expire and will need to be re-served regularly)

Best of luck
