Hi Folks

I tend to buy a property every few years and let it out to tenants.  I have been doing this for a few years' now.

I have a few questions:

My son is finishing his marketing management degree soon but doesn't know what he wants to do after.  Can his degree come into any use within my small portfolio of properties?
He does seem to be interested in buy to let business and seems to spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos where individuals claim to have become millionaires by going into the property business.  He seems to think it is all true and do-able.  This is also proving to be a distraction from his studies.

How can I introduce him to my small buy to let business and also make him understand that although it can be profitable, it is not all rosy and money wouldn't just land on his laps?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I can only suggest that he spends some time reading this and other forums, both the tenant and landlord parts. If that fails to dissuade him, he can come and meet me,I was once a reasonably sane person. In fact, there's a few of us here that could put him right off the idea.

BTL is attractive to lazy people who don't understand BTL.

Sure, I'm not claiming it's like a real job... but neither is it truly passive income. It's quite passive income. If you are willing to encourage your son with nepotism then go for it... but I think I'd want my spawn to at least try to make their own way in life, at least at first. Watching YouTube videos and dreaming about taking on your empire doesn't bode well in my book, but I could only be reading what I want to read. I'd keep him as far away from my BTL business as possible - it seems he already has one of the characteristics of a Landlord - laziness - but what about all the others? Is he predatory and willing to take advantage of people? Does he lie a lot and engage in rule-shirking and breaking? Does he have an over-inflated opinion of his DIY skills with no evidence or experience to back it up? And does he often "go dark"? Sometimes those attributes can be learned... sometimes they're innate.

One thing is for sure,a degree in marketing will be neither use nor ornament to him as a landlord.
