For all those landlords caught up in the mire of the new regulations of council tax and how different councils are treating the regulations.  Look up MacAttram v London Borough of Camden, Tendring district council have used this as precedent,  this as set in stone and referring to this case with all disputes regarding council tax.  It is not even relevant to ASTs!! it applies to a commercial tenancy, they are informing me that they do not care what my tenancy agreement states that if a tenant leaves your property with written notice given, the notice is irrelevant, as soon as the tenants leaves, the property is deemed liable for council tax and they duly billed me.  I will argue quite happily with the valuation tribunal - but appear not even to be given this opportunity, as today i received a summons!! incandescent with rage at the councils audacity I have been on the phone to them we shall see where this goes.  Any other landlords out there having this case quoted to them or similar problems please respond I will be interested in any other suggestions for fighting the bastards!!

If the property is vacant, and you own it, you're liable for the council tax.
Some councils give a discount if it's vacant, some don't.

If you're having any major work done, try and get the property documented as unsafe,
while it's being done - this is an alternative reason for not paying council tax.

As the tax is a major revenue source for the council,
they're making sure they collect it.

It's worth calling them as soon as you know the property is vacant,
as even councils that discount are reluctant to credit a charge already sent out.
