Periodical Tenancy - when does tenant's one month notice begin?

We have tenants who were on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement via our agents, and are now in the Periodic Tenancy period. The rental is paid monthly on the 7th of every month. We have never had rent paid daily or weekly.
They have now given us one months notice to exit the property.
This is half way from the rental cycle.
Our agent says that they can give one month from this date, i.e. one month from the 20th, and rent can be calculated on a daily basis for the last 14 days into February.
However, the cycle begins on the 7th every month, and I remember when I used to rent that notice had to be given, and then a full month followed.
Can anyone please confirm the legalities of this.
Ideally we would like to have the notice to begin when the rental month cycle begins, i.e. from 7th February, which gives us more time to get new tenants in, but if this isn't the legal case, then we can't.

I look forward to any advice.
Best Wishes,
Peter

"Normally the notice you give must end on the first or last day of the period of a tenancy,", hope that's helpful. Get them to pay up until the next rent due date, no obligation to pro rate anything. They are obviously renting up until that time, though, and have possession.
