I hope I have got this completely wrong..... I read somewhere, that if a tenant leaves owing council tax whilst on a Periodic Tenancy, then the landlord is liable to pay this!  Surely this can't be true.

Over the years I have had a couple of my tenants leave (one just did a runner) the other one I had to serve a Section 8) these both owed council tax, but were on AST's.  The council never asked me to pay the council tax!

Thanks for any replies, and apologies if this is a stupid question.

No,a periodic tenancy makes no difference to the responsibilities of either landlord or tenant.

What you said is undisputable, undeniable, irrefutable... therefore I must agree.

Thanks Heavykarma & Hippogriff.  This has put my mind at rest.

Apart from when a tenant moves to a new place while under contract to yourself, then the council say that a tenant can't pay council tax on 2 properties.  A landlord, however can pay for as many as they have.
