Is it possible and legal to request the rent to be paid in advance?

What I mean is, to take a deposit, have it protected, and also take the first months rent in one go?

This way the tenant would pay on the first of the month, for the following 4 weeks.

Is there any reason why this is not usually done as standard?

What do you mean why isn't it usually done as standard, that's exactly what I do - as standard.

Of course rent is paid in advance. Money first, property later.

Only LHA pay in arrears... weird, huh?

I would not hand over keys to a Tenant if cleared funds - for deposit and rent - were not in my account. If a Tenant didn't agree to that then they'd not be my Tenant - no hard feelings. But I don't think they'd be any Landlord's Tenant.
