A tenant ended her tenancy and left the property some months ago.  We are now receiving letters from the heating company tat there is an outstanding bill of nearly £800.  Contact information for the tenant is no longer extant and we are unable to locate her whereabouts.  The utility company, Heat Link, has now sent an invoice for the amount annotated with "(Tenant's name) debt onto owner account".  Are we liable?  We have no say on energy contracts between the tenants and the service provider and I am aggrieved that it appears HeatLink expect us to cover this bill.  Or are the energy company just trying to recover their debt by any means and the invoice should be ignored?
Any advice or guidance on what we should, or can do, would be very much appreciated.

If this was a standard AST,the tenant would be responsible for all utilities.This should not be your problem,but they will try it on.Don't just ignore it. Make a complaint in writing.Tracing the tenant is their responsibility.

I am assuming this was an AST, in which case you are definitely not responsible. I know this from my own similar experience. Just send the company contract documentation.
