Hi all.

I've been quoted £250 for an electric certificate. This included doing some external work which is why its higher than usual. I wasn't buying into that so I'm waiting for a break down of costs to see exactly why its so high.

May I ask what you consider to be a fair, realistic cost for one of these based on your previous experiences?

Also, the guy I was waiting on for my gas certificate is unfortunately unable to do it now due to illness. I was expected him to do it, so now I'm unsure as to how much these should cost? What are your thoughts?

I look forward to your comments.

Depends where you are.

In Cornwall, I pay £80 a property for electric, and gas is covered under an Insurance, but £45 - £90 is about right.

Is £250 high? Don't know, you've not said what work is being done.

Martha

Why dont you do what everyone else should do and get three quotes. And then you will have your answer.

Thanks for your replies all.

I naively took a trusted family friend's advice, (he is our local handyman) on getting the electric certificate from someone he knows and uses often; this is why I didn't get any other quotes.

Lesson learned.

I'll wait to see the break down and let you know how I get on.

I paid about £75 for the Gas cert and I also paid £250 for the Electrical 5 year cert..

In my case, as I had just bought the house, and it had 2 consumer units, one in the main house and one external in the converted garage, I wanted all the cables traced to know where they all went, and then tested for conformity...

So depending on the size of the work involved, I could see it costing £250  I had 2 electricians there for about 4 hours :)

Thanks for that swag.

Still not received a break down of costs...now I have something to compare to. ..

My NICEIC sparky is good and I trust him.  He charges an hourly rate of £22 + VAT, and earns his money.  Hope this is of some use.

Thought I'd mention this here.

I happened to stumple across in the Insurance docks the requirement to have I think NARCOS approved electrician do the inspection, but mine had that other qualification, I emailed my broker, and he amended the insurance.

Just saying it might be important in the event of a claim and worth the effort of making sure it's right in the small print.

Cheers thanks.

Should have this breakdown of costs one day...

Shelly

Hi, just to add to your comparisons, I paid £55 for my gas safety certificate.
