Hi,

I am a first time landlord, looking to rent my property. I got the below message from a propsetive tenant. Iam confused on who is to be the tenant? Who do I do a tenant refenceing on? Or is this type of arrangement a no go area? Please advise.

"My circumstances are as follows; I live in locality of the a house for rent.  We own the house we live in and I and my husband work full time.  My 2 children are currently in childcare locally however the hours are a struggle so my mum and stepfather are coming back to the UK on 28th March having lived abroad for the last 7 years, to look after my children, drop and pick up from school etc. whilst we work.  I am looking for a house to rent for them locally where they can settle.

My husband and I have good jobs and we are of course are more than happy for references and background checks to take place.

In answer to your questions there would be two people living in the property (my mum and her husband) no pets, smokers or benefits and my children (aged 2 and 7) would visit.  They are a mature married couple who I feel would make fantastic tenants."

Thank you

If your property is desirable and priced correctly you should not have any problems finding Tenants where the situation is crystal clear. This might not be an issue, but I veer away from anything that feels 'complicated'. Yes, it will put them at a disadvantage, but you're not a charity worker. You don't have to feel bad about letting people down. You're about to hand over an asset worth many, many thousands of Pounds to strangers... best that you feel entirely comfortable in doing so.

This is a little bizarre, to say the least! In this situation I would imagine that you would be required to take references and conduct background checks for the woman's mother and step-father as they would be the ones living in the actual property.
