I am taking over management of a property from my letting agency. The current tenants are staying but will be on a new contract. They've been there for a few years now. Should I get new references for them? Do other landlords do this kind of thing, or should I only do it for new tenants?

I can only add please check their deposit situation since you will have to give your tenants the prescribed info - within the correct time frame of course - once their deposit is transferred from the agent to you.
