Consider telling a Broker what you want from the insurance and go from there... it worked quite well for me. Got a few quotes back to compare against each other, cost vs. cover, and then also ask the Broker for a bit of advice. I ended up going with an insurer I don't think I'd ever heard of (not something you see on the telly anyway). I went to the same Broker for the second property and because there were different circumstances (overseas students in an apartment where there's no need for buildings insurance as it's paid already by me in another way) then I ended up with a different insurer, but all done via the same Broker. Obviously they take a little bit of commission, which I usually balk at, but it's not unreasonable.

I did start by talking to insurers directly... their opening bids were quite high, then I told them that I thought they were quite high, then they dropped them to something more reasonable, which made me annoyed - I now try to avoid all this playing around.

Thankyou  for your advice will take a look at brokers. You are right about them being high, and I think varied, I looked at two or three and there was a £200 difference.
