Hello,

Has anyone  experienced being hit with a late payment fee for the Landlord's registration.  I was sent 2 reminders via email when I was in bad health - in and out of hospital and recovering thereafter.  Checking my emails was really the last thing on my mind.  Anyway is this a valid way to issue a reminder?  The council have now issued me with a letter stating they will be charging me £110 as a late registration fee.  Could they not have sent a letter in the first place reminding me to renew rather than a ridiculous email.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lol!

Do you not see the irony of posting that question on a digital forum?

You were sent the reminders, you wern't well, you owe the money, you are miffed.

Why not write them a letter expressing your disgust, copy it to the Times letter page and to your local MP. Old School!

That may sound less than compassionate, BUT that is the country we live in.

Recently I had a new Electricity account, well 11 actually, they sent a letter asking for £50, I tried to register online and it took ages to get through the IT stuff. Anyway by the time it was sorted, I owed a £39 late payment fee on each one, then when I wanted to put in the readings it woudln't let me as it was less than what they estimated, also I couldn't see what they had estimated as it wasn't a bill but a request for payment! Yeah I know. A nice lady at EDF did sort it out, but it took over an hour on the phone....

Also a friend who lives in Hong Kong, and has done for 20 years, but is British, was asked to complete an online tax return, he changed emails, forgot about the Inland Revenue, and when the caught up with him, he did the return, aid £12 tax on savings, and was fined..... wait for it...... £1200 for late submission. He's savage cabbage obviously and wanted to know if he could get legal aid to appeal! Yeah Right.

My brother has been in hospital for 6 months, and i have been paying his council tax when he gets a threat letter, each time paying for a couple more months ( its £180 a year the extra bit his benefits dont cover) anyway last week a summons arrives, with £80 costs added. I call and ask how much he owes, and they cant tell me, but the reassure me its right and proper and all that. So I then explain what I have done and that I have paid in effect up to date, but instead of 6 payments only 2. She is very patronizing etc and then finally after insisting she re does the bill, " oh well yes technically you are up to date" " I will as a gesture of goodwill remove the summons!" So without any warning they issues a summons that was not due, and have fined someone on benefits, who has Aspergers, and could never have had this discussion with the council, and think it okay! I then asked for the bill to be spread over 12 months and not the 10 they always ask for ( we all have a legal right to insist on payments spread over 12) and it works out now he only has to pay £13 a month for the rest of the council year!

My friend, it is a simple fact now a days we are governed by people with  no sense, no empathy, no spirit of justice, fairness, sportsmanship, humour  or personality, and if you fall foul of the rules as stated, pay up.  You are never going to win, but at least try by speaking to a Supervisor on the phone. Not a forum.... Although welcome, and may you enjoy your stay with us.

Great forum for finding how little I know about things.  I didnt even know one had to register with the council.  My council seems to run a voluntary scheme.  And why would I want them sticking their beak in to my business ?  Is this only for those whose lettings are paid for by councils ?

Its mandatory for HMO's, the rules on what sort of licenced HMO needs a licence are on this site.
