Tenant possibly going to Prison

I have had a lodger in my house for just over a year.  Today he told a mutual friend that he is going to court this week and his solicitor has told him to expect a prison sentence of at least 18months.  He also said that he has sorted things out so that my rent will be paid, should he be sent to prison to keep his room for when he comes back out.

This is the first I have heard of this, he has said nothing to me.  I am about to start looking for a new house to downsize and would have been giving him his notice anyway very soon. I certainly do not want to keep his room open and all his possessions in my home waiting for him to return from prison, especially as I also learned he has recently been put on the sexual offenders register.  I have grandchildren to think about.

Advice on what I should do would be very much appreciated.

Lodgers have very little rights (none really) find out his situation and before he goes down give him notice.  It's up to him to sort his stuff out.
