My council is demanding to see the tenancy agreements between me and my HMO tenants. I have nothing to hide but I am wondering if I would be contravening any Data Protection laws. There is a lot of personal info on the contracts (names, email addresses, phone numbers, bank account details). I gave the council the names of all my tenants a few weeks ago but now they want to see the contracts. Just wondered if this is normal. Thanks

Does your council require a HMO licence to be obtained?

You could try sending them a copy of the agreements with everything apart from Mr redacted.

I definitely don't need a licence as I don't have enough rooms to let. It is a student let so I am thinking that they need the names so they can verify that the tenants are actual students. It just strikes me as overkill that they need to see a copy of the tenancy agreements.

Ask them why, then spout the DPA and see where they go from there.

They want to know that you have given them agreements.

Give them the names and a blank copy of the agreement they have all signed.

Don't quote Data protection, it makes you an arse, IMO.
