Plumber charging VAT on goods bought on my behalf from shop within his invoice

Hi there!

I was a bit surprised to see that the plumber who did some work in my rented property has included within his invoice the purchase price of bath taps and other parts he asked my permission to buy. Prior to him purchasing those, he contacted me quoting their price asking me if it is ok for him to purchase them. I expected to be presented with the receipts for the bath taps in addition to the plumber's invoice for work carried out. This results in me having to pay VAT twice on parts purchased - once to the shop and second time to the plumber. Is that acceptable?

When prompted for an explanation from the plumber, I received the following reply: "I..... can advise that the invoice is correct in so far as the amounts charged. The cost of any materials used at your property were supplied by us and as such are VATable. The invoices in respect of any materials supplied/used at your property also remain the property of our Company."

Please, can anyone advise? Should I not have been presented with their Terms and Conditions of Business prior to them undertaking to do the work?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Should you not have asked to see their Terms and Conditions of Business prior to you engaging them to do the work?

Firstly just make sure that the price for the taps is the Ex Vat price. It should be, and most wholesalers only use the ex VAT price. He wont show you the invoice as this will show that he is probably getting 60% off this price in any event.

Then the VAT added is correct.

Either way, you were asked, and you agreed. It seems you should pay up.
