Does anyone have knowledge of the legal status of overnight lets?

I epect I'd be unhelpful if I said: "Yes, I know them well, I've stayed in loads of hotels".

So maybe you could give me a bit more detail on what these are.  Thanks.

I am glad someone else admitted to not understanding this.  I had wondered whether or not to post the same question.   

Holiday lets?  Hotel or B & B accommodation?  That is all I can think of, and I know little about any of them beyond staying in the occasional one.
