Hello and thanks for reading!, ive searched the forum and not quite found the answers I need, so here goes

Im a newbie to this tax return lark and am starting to ponder if its too late to seek pro advice (as well as the worry or yet more out of pocket expense!)

registered for online self assessment - and perhaps naïvely assuming that that ought to mean its do-able by someone with a reasonable level of education and a calculator!

so ive calculated my gross income

subtracting my (understood to be) allowable expenses - being

monthly agent fees total
monthly british gas home care fees total
annual home insurance total
maintenance costs (thus far only leaky loo and broken drain pipe)

im not subtracting the 'set up /lease arrangement fee'

my head starts to hurt when I realise I have to now find out how much interest bank accounts and investment accounts have paid .... but otherwise am I headed in the right direction do you think ?

Yes, it sounds like you're on the right track. Bear in mind that the odds are HMRC will never check your workings - you're too small a fish for them to waste their time on! - and, even if they do, they're not going to make too much of a fuss about an honest mistake. Just have a bash at it and see if the calculation at the end produces a sensible answer. It doesn't go anywhere until you submit it at the end of the process so you can go back and tweak it if needs be.
