The landlord used the Merton Council housing solutions system to find a tenant for her house. A mother of five moved in, caused £2,000 of damage, then refused to leave after the 12 month tenancy agreement expired, and caused a further £8,000 of damage before being evicted.

The Landlord is also angry that the tenant was given advice on fighting eviction by the council.

Jo Williams, the council's head of housing, said that the council was only responsible for matching tenants with landlords, not enforcing the contract between them - and that this was made clear to both parties.

Yeah, I understand, but I think Jo needs to realise that landlords won't want to house those on social benefits if there are no perks, and no help when the tenant goes crazy...

I agree, I actually had someone in this situation next door to one of my city properties (I know the guy who owns it) they broke nearly every kitchen appliance and got the door kicked in by the police then just disappeared, council paid for the door and said the rest was his contract to uphold and they were not getting involved.
Council also know where they went but won't say because it's against civil rights.

Civil rights my arse! How about a disclosure request under the freedom of information act?
