3 tenants in a joint tenancy - one might not pay their share

Hi everyone! I let a property out to 3 tenants. They are joint tenants so there's one contract which they all signed (they've been there for 2 years, each July the contract has been renewed, so they are there until July 2022). One of the tenants has now gone to Scotland for a few months but says she will still contribute as wants to keep her room here.

I got a call from one of the other tenants a couple of days ago, saying that the tenant that is in Scotland has been suspended from their job, was really hard to live with and she doesn't think she'll pay towards the  rent when/if she loses her job. The tenant in Scotland has paid towards December and I havent heard her side of the story. I've been given advice and that is that they are all liable and should be thought of as one tenant.

I know that would should happen is that if they fall short of the rent they should be served a section 21 notice but I feel that this is a bit harsh, they've looked after the house so nice and it isn't the other tenants fault! If this other person starts not contributing to the rent! Should I give the go ahead to the other tenants to find another person that'll rent out the room? I dont know what to do and feel really conflicted! Any advice much appreciated! Thank you!

I would be inclined to wait and see what happens.The tenant may decide to remain in Scotland if she has lost her job,and could ask to be released from her tenancy.As you say,you have not heard the other side,so I would keep your counsel for now.

This is nothing more than gossip. Even if it turns out to be true, the Tenant talking to you is a grass.
