Hi Chaps,

Firstly, I know only a definitive answer will come from HMRC and none of you are tax-professionals (?), but I value your advice...

I'm in the process of moving and replaced a knackered shed and I'm wondering if some or all of it is a legtimate expense.

Synopsis of situation.

Knackered shed removed.
New shed put in different position
New shed required new base.

Shed is for tenant's use, and is mentioned in their contract.

So, questions
1) Is it all a legitimate expense? is the new base "Betterment" or just part of the work needed for like-for-like replacement?

2) Were the shed to be bigger, for sake of argument, twice the size, would 50% likely be an allowable expense? or all of it, or none of it?

Cheers!

Who could prove the new shed was bigger, for sake of argument?

Technically speaking you need to replace like for like so 50% bigger is hard to argue as replacement....but like Hippo says who is going to come out to your house to measure the previous plot (if it can still be determined even) versus the new plot.  If you really really want to be pernickety then you could split on basis of size (50%) but why bother???

Don't split the base and the shed..it's all to replace a shed...(even if there are two invoices).
Claim it all as deductible expenses.
Always err justifiably on the side of paying less tax.   :P

Best of luck
